Newbottle quizzers take top title once again

This month saw the annual CIU Conference weekend take place in Blackpool and, as usual, the event was brought to a close by the grand final of the National Quiz.

As the recommended supplier of gaming, amusement and lottery products to the CIU, Dransfields were once again the proud sponsors of the quiz, which is always a closely-fought contest.

Chris Haley (MD) was present to welcome all contestants and to demonstrate Dransfields’ support for the CIU and clubland.

The four-person teams were tested to their quizzing limits by Redtooth quiz master and question-setter Dave Bill, a former Mastermind, Only Connect and Pointless contestant.

Over six rounds, the teams were asked a broad range of challenging questions including: ‘What is the name given to the area in baseball where pitchers warm up before entering a game?’ and ‘Who was the last member of the British Royal Family to be cremated?’.

As the competition went into the final round there was just one point separating the top two teams, before current champions Newbottle WMC ‘A’ clinched the title for the second year in a row.

Their final score was 57 points, with Clarence Sports and Social Club ‘A’ Team coming second on 56 points, and Sydney Street WMC taking third place with a score of 46.

The winning team was presented with a widescreen TV and a cheque for £500, with the second and third-placed teams winning cash prizes of £200 and £100 respectively.

Not everyone was battling for the top spot; a number of ‘just for fun’ teams also took part, with members including Union President George Dawson CMD, Union General Secretary Kenneth D Green CMD, former General Secretary Kevin Smyth and his wife Yvonne, NEC member Chris O’Neill CMD, and Dransfields’ own Managing Director, Chris Haley.

As ever, the Dransfields CIU National Quiz grand final provided a great end to the conference and a chance for club members from across the country to get together – thanks to everyone who took part and congratulations to the winning teams.
